Getting Around

Brunei public transportation system has gradually improved over the years. Now, getting aorund is relatively easy. Taxi and Bus services are available to visitors/passengers at most hotels, shopping centres and at the Brunei International Airport.

Taxis are located at the multi-storey carpark at Jalan Cator. Taxis can be hailed from the street or from Jalan Cator. Metered taxis also ply the airport-hotel routes exclusively. There is a surcharge fee for taxi rides from 11pm to 6am. For further Inquiries you can call the Land Transport Department at 2451979 during office hours.

Water taxis can be hailed from the numerous "docking ports" along the river banks of the Brunei River. Fares are negotiable. Water taxis are the most common-and cheapest-means of transportation. It is also the ideal way to view the Kampong Ayer (water village) up close.

Speedboats are used to travel to the Temburong District. The speedboats pick pessangers up at Kianggeh jetty around Jalan Residency in the capital. the service is available between 7.45am and 4pm daily. Fares are about $7 per person and $5 for the student.

Buses operate from 6.30am to 6pm with the Central Line Bus running every 15minutes and the Cirlce Line every 20minutes.Bus fares is only $1.00 and 50cents for the Students and as well as the senior citizen.

The Royal Brunei Airlines flies to more than 20 destinations in the world and has offices in many cities. RBA operates a fleet of aeroplanes comprising Boeings 737s, 757s,767s, as well as Airbus A320s and A319s. Brunei International Airport is the only airport in the country.

Ferry Services, for those who enjoy journeys by sea, you can reach Brunei by boat or ferry. The main ferry terminal in Brunei is the Serasa Ferry Terminal in Muara. You can board the ferries to go to the Malaysian Federal territory of Labuan, and other Malaysian town of Limbang, Lawas and Sundar. Ferry services start from 7.45am to 4pm. And the new services is, From Brunei to Menumbok and then you can go to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

Places of Interest in Brunei

Kampong Ayer (Water Village)

A journey along the Brunei River will be the perfect experience into the country's past. It houses the largest water village un the world, Kampong Ayer.

Hailed the "Venice of the East" by European tourists, Kampong Ayer has about approximately 40villages with a population more than approximately 20,000, who live in traditionally made stilt houses that are connected by a maze of wooden walkways.

Although the world is evolving quickly, due to technological advances and globalisation, Kampong Ayer still preserves much of the historical features first witnessed by the great explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the 16th century.

Visitors can access Kampong Ayer by riding on water taxis, which transport you to and from the shore during the day and are available in front of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah in the heart of teh capital and the water village it self.

Within the Kampong Ayer, you also can visit to the Kampong Ayer Cultural Tourism Gallery which is open for the public and where you can see and find the local traditional handicraft as well. 

Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque

It is the largest and most magnificent mosque in the country, with its grand shimmering golden domes and intricately ornamental minarets set in a landscape of gardens and fountains. The mosque was built to commemorate the 25th anniversary of His Majesty's reign. Visitors are accepted during the day, BUT are asked to dress conservatively before entering the premises. 

Pulau Selirong (Selirong Island)

Pulau Selirong is an island 45minutes by boat from Muara. Also known as Mosquito Island, it covers an area of 2,566 hactares, filled with mangrove swamps and wildlife. There is also a two-kilometer wooden walkway built to offer close-ups of the scultting life forms that thrives in the unique ecosystem. An observation towe, toilet facilities and rest huts can also be found on the island.

Something to Share with You about Brunei

Climate:

Located close to the equator, Brunei Darussalam enjoys moderate equatorial climate throughout the year with regular temperatures ranging between 23 degree celcius and 32 degree celcius. Although Brunei Darussalam does not have distinguishable wet or dry season, rain falls occur heaviest in September to January and May to July with March and April being the warmest months of the year; humidity is considered high throughout the year (an estimate of 79 per cent).


Brunei Darussalam also lies outside the typhoon belt that often plagues surrounding regions, while the occurrence of earthquakes and severe flooding are rare.

Language and Religion:

The official language is Malay or Bahasa Melayu. Other language include English and Chinese and its dialect.


The official religion is Islam, with a majority of the population being Muslim. Other religious beliefs, such as Christianity and Buddhism, can be found and are practised in Brunei Darussalam by other ethnic group.

Culture:

Brunei is one of the oldest kingdoms in the region with more than 600 years recorded history. Islam, its state religion, has a great influence on the country's culture, customs and tradition. The Ministry of Religious Affairs actively fosters and promote Islam.


Currency:

The Brunei Currency Board was established in 1967 with a sole responsibility of managing and issuing currency notes and coins in Brunei Darussalam. On June 12,1967, Brunei Darussalam began commencing issuance of its own currency.
The unit currency is Brunei Dollar (BND) divided into 100 cents. It is on par with the Singapore Dollar. and both are freely traded in their respect countries. The exchange rate of Brunei Dollar is roughly around 1.6 and currently there are no exchange controls in Brunei.

Brunei Darussalam is situated in the Southeastern region of Asia, Brunei Darussalam is harboured on the coasts of island of Borneo, the world's third largest island. Bordered by the Eastern Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak. The small kingdom of Brunei has a total land area of 5,765 sq km with 161km of palm-lined, blue watered coastlines along the South China Sea to its north.

Surrounded and divided into TWO by the MALAYSIAN state of Sarawak, Brunei Darussalam TWO enclaves which contain FOUR main districts, namely: Brunei Muara District, Tutong District, Belait District and Temburong District.

Brunei Muara is the smallest district in the country, but it is also the main centre of major economic and government administritive activities. it is also home to the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan and more than half of country's population.

Temburong district is the second largest and least populated district. Well known as Green Jewel Of Borneo. Because it is a very popular Eco-tourism hot spot, which boasts a vast tract of unspoilt natural habitat and rainforest's.

Tutong district, a thirty minutes drive from the capital, is the third largest of the country and is home to many of the country's ethnic tribes, such as Dusun, Murut, and Kedayan.

Belait district, the third largest district in the country with a land area of 2,727sq km. It is also the main production base on the nation's major economic resources which is OIL AND GAS.
