Kampong Ayer (Water Village)
A journey along the Brunei River will be the perfect experience into the country's past. It houses the largest water village un the world, Kampong Ayer.
Hailed the "Venice of the East" by European tourists, Kampong Ayer has about approximately 40villages with a population more than approximately 20,000, who live in traditionally made stilt houses that are connected by a maze of wooden walkways.
Although the world is evolving quickly, due to technological advances and globalisation, Kampong Ayer still preserves much of the historical features first witnessed by the great explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the 16th century.
Visitors can access Kampong Ayer by riding on water taxis, which transport you to and from the shore during the day and are available in front of the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah in the heart of teh capital and the water village it self.
Within the Kampong Ayer, you also can visit to the Kampong Ayer Cultural Tourism Gallery which is open for the public and where you can see and find the local traditional handicraft as well.
Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque
It is the largest and most magnificent mosque in the country, with its grand shimmering golden domes and intricately ornamental minarets set in a landscape of gardens and fountains. The mosque was built to commemorate the 25th anniversary of His Majesty's reign. Visitors are accepted during the day, BUT are asked to dress conservatively before entering the premises.
Pulau Selirong (Selirong Island)
Pulau Selirong is an island 45minutes by boat from Muara. Also known as Mosquito Island, it covers an area of 2,566 hactares, filled with mangrove swamps and wildlife. There is also a two-kilometer wooden walkway built to offer close-ups of the scultting life forms that thrives in the unique ecosystem. An observation towe, toilet facilities and rest huts can also be found on the island.
